MADE IN CHINA, 2016
Textile Sculptur / Silk / 300x111 cm
The work “Made in China” was created within the scope of a three week stay in
Chongqing.
It was developed confronting the ecological and humanitarian effects of chinese
industrial policy in the extended urban space. The title refers to the mass
production of consumer and industry goods exported from Asia into the whole
world.
In China 4.000 people die from the effects of air and water pollution every day.
To visualize this shocking fact I hung a white silk cloth outside my window.
Within ten days it had changed color due to the contamination of water and air.
I embroidered the cloth with 40.0000 filaments of pure white silk yarn. In China
the color white symbolizes sadness. In Austria it is customary to hoist up a black
flag when a celebrated personality dies. Silk is precious. The life of every human
being is precious. Cultural conventions engage into a mutual dialogue and ask
for communication and critique in times of crisis.
